If you're interested in trying out BSD on the desktop vs in a server or through some other BSD-based appliance distro (projects like OPNsense or TrueNAS Core which build on BSD but are mostly intended to be used from a Web GUI) you could take a look at GhostBSD [0]. But why go to linux when alternatives are available? FreeBSD is a great option for a modern stable OS that can run pretty much everything linux can. Desktop system is also easy to install via DarkMate[0] on vanilla FreeBSD or then go to e.g. GhostBSD[1] that has all the bells and whistles from GUI installation onwards. It is viable as a desktop operating system. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be/have been so many projects dedicating themselves to pre-building a FreeBSD desktop system, like MidnightBSD, GhostBSD others you can find. I've tried GhostBSD and it was nice. Source: about 3 years ago
