On Facebook, I often see captions printed on top of the video as a separate block (see example below) which solves my two issues! Unfortunately, the only program I can find to create captions like this is zubtitle.com which is great if you want auto-generated captions that are only available in the language spoken in the video. w2g is currently bugged at the moment; until it's fixed, I recommend you use a dedicated website/extension like https://getmetastream.com/ or https://hyperbeam.com/ as it is far better because you can use them for any site.
