Interoperability of messaging used to be the case, and the underlying tech is there. At one point, Messages, AOL Instant Messenger, Facebook, and Google Talk / Hangouts / Voice all supported exchanging messages via the IETF XMPP (Jabber) messaging standard. It's a giant step backwards in site design. Discuit wastes an incredible amount of screen space in making the site look pretty. Scroll down a bit and you'll see that more than half of your screen is empty and there is very little submissions displayed. Look at https://old.reddit.com/ and see the difference between the two.
