Even though reports are free I can't say they are very informative enough. And how do I know if I can trust these reports?

Out of curiosity, I gave vincheck.info a spin and compared it to carfax and autocheck. While the carfax and autocheck match perfectly, the vincheck data is 99% fabricated. These were my own vehicles and so I at least know the history during my ownership which is reflected in carfax and autocheck. Go to https://vincheck.info/ and enter the VIN. Go through all the screens and at the end you'll get to a screen where it asks your email and name (I just used a disposable email in the off chance they spam) and it will show you a title check report that checks against the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS).
