Not sure about “state of the art” but if you’re on Mac, VDMX (https://vidvox.net/) is a good place to start looking. "Regular" people don't really need FFMPEG. Regular people need tools with GUIs that have a non-generic purpose. So stuff like https://kdenlive.org/en/ that are backed by ffmpeg are (imo) superior "regular" person tools.
