ASCII isn't the only encoding method. You're looking at unicode characters, which can be expressed as numbers just like ASCII characters based on the encoding system . They are simply unicode characters. Https://home.unicode.org/ Try it in VS Code. Yes, an Emoji is valid in JS. Different browsers render the emojis differently though. Source: 12 months ago

When you refer to something as an “Emoji” you indicate that they’re apart of the Unicode language. What Reddit is doing is not considered apart of unicode therefore not technically an “Emoji”, instead it’s just a plain old image used in text format. Source: over 1 year ago
