ASCII isn't the only encoding method. You're looking at unicode characters, which can be expressed as numbers just like ASCII characters based on the encoding system . When you refer to something as an โEmojiโ you indicate that theyโre apart of the Unicode language. What Reddit is doing is not considered apart of unicode therefore not technically an โEmojiโ, instead itโs just a plain old image used in text format. Source: over 1 year ago
