  I haven't used this myself, but I saw a recent announcement here about https://github.com/vifon/tmsu.el#features by /u/vifon which lets you tag files (with https://tmsu.org/ ) from dired, perhaps it would be possible to add features on top of that to colour based on tags?   If you want something more specific for client proofing, Picflow is AWESOME for this. It allows clients to draw and comment on photos to more specifically show you want they want fixed.
