A coffee shop I started going to has free wifi, but what is confounding is that once connected to their wifi I can only visit maybe 5-10% of sites I try connecting to. Works great with google.com, maps.google.com, tmz.com . Not sure if this is applicable, but if you're using Word or Scrivener or something, you may want to switch to a plaintext editor like Dark Room or Typora--something that won't underline your spelling and grammar mistakes.
