The command line interface is designed for interoperability with chess GUIs according to an informal standard called UCI. I use wxWidgets for my chess GUI Tarrasch https://triplehappy.com I am not sure if the glacial release schedule these days is a strength (it's stable, there's not much left to do), or a weakness (the project is dying).
