  I made use of skyscanner.net, google.com/travel/flights and momondo.co.za to compare prices when purchasing tickets recently. I scanned those sights daily with added alerts for months as to find the best prices only to eventually purchase the tickets direct from the airline.   This might be a bit tricky from Sandakan and it is going to cost you. Scoot, Air Asia or Jetstar will be your best bet to Perth. Getting to/from Perth cheaply could involve using some imagination to find a cheap flight. You might want to look at where you will end up to fly to Perth. Though with flights, you can also optimize a lot if you have enough lead time: I recommend https://skyscanner.com/ Trains are nice if you need to transport anything of volume, if you stay longer than a day or two so you can amortize the travel time, if you have lots of run-up time, and probably cheaper if you travel a lot.
