Practice is everything. The more you draw sketches more progress you get. When I graduated from the art academy, we went to a museum and copy famous artists to understand their lines, shapes, and composition. Later you will understand how to progress and build your style. There are no good hard surface modelling apps on iPad yet. We do have Nomad Sculpt which is rapidly becoming better and better, but it's mainly a streamlined zBrush clone for sculpting and some model painting.
