Another option, better, IMHO, is to download Sigil (https://sigil-ebook.com/), and also download and install the epubcheck plugin for Sigil (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2950625&postcount=1). Then see if Sigil find any issues upon opening your epub, if not, then run the plugin and see if there are any validation issues. It's just CommonMark, Gruber was ticked off enough that he declined to allow them to use the term Markdown at all. Aha that's just an inline footnote, we support both in Supernotes. So you can quickly write ^[Name of Reference] (that will auto assign it the number 1 once rendered) rather than [^1] ...
