It actually has gotten a lot better and Atlassian has an entire team focused on improving the search experience across their suite of products (they started with Confluence). If I had control of the back end I would implement a full-text engine such as Lucene. Generate the lookup table as a batch job and then perform the FTS when the request comes in.
