I love IRC but it serves a slightly different purpose. It isn't threaded and it sacrifices permanency for instantaneousness. In my opinion, a forums and chat rooms compliment each other. Saidit is one good Reddit alternative that implements IRC. It's based on Reddit's code but with some modifications. Every page has an embedded IRC box specific to that subcommunity. For Reddit alternatives, it looks like https://saidit.net/ (https://github.com/libertysoft3/saidit) and https://phuks.co/ (https://github.com/Phuks-co/throat) could be viable alternatives. I keep the space station live feed from ustream.tv on one of my monitors at work as a sort of peaceful distraction. When I turned on the feed today, the earth was passing from left to right on my monitor. However, for the last three months, it had been passing from right to left. The bit of the space station that can be seen in the feed is still in the same spot though, so I'm left to wonder: did they adjust... Source: about 2 years ago
