I have been using Safeswiss for a while now and found it exceptionally good. The new Droid update looks very modern, some really need features that you don't find on other messengers, push to delete anytime works very well, I also like signup requires no phone number or email, Unlike Telegram, all messages & voice calls are fully encrypted by default - Very good worth a try

We currently have the Matrix protocol, with client applications such as Element supporting it. We also have XMPP as another option. Generally more modern than IRC, these platforms are primarily developed as FOSS software. This makes it less likely for developers to impact their users negatively.
