"Updating applications "; yes that is exactly how it works if you can't leverage something that already does it for you, like Patch My PC. However, there are some free things that can assist--they aren't 99% automatically done for you like PatchMyPC aspires to do, but at least it's a helping hand. https://ruckzuck.tools/ comes to mind for that.
