  Protect yourself by first pulling your FICO score (go to MyFico and pull your own score, and you can get a coupon from retailmenot.com) and shop around. You can shop around for rates without a hard pull so you know how much car you can afford for the interest rate you would qualify for with that FICO.   I'm in Canada, too. Lands' End has fast shipping to Canada, and I've bought a lot of quality basics from them.   If you're just shopping around / looking for comparatives, then sites like apartments.com, and https://sfbay.craigslist.org/ are good for getting an overview, keeping in mind they have a bit of a bias in their numbers as they only compare / show what they have so using at least two sites to get a "baseline" would be best.
