Once you get into it, the power of subgroups, and lookahead/behind processing beats some of the mental gymnastics you would need to go to code it out in your language of choice. If it's a one-off regex to scrape some data and you verify the output, great. If it's to be used in an application and you don't understand it, that could be an issue.
