About tabs, since Windows 7 I use tabs in the file explorer thanks to Qttabbar. Qttabbar tabs are customizable and more useful than native tabs. I had to use vivetool to permanently disable native tabs, and instead I use Qttabbar tabs. You can download tab skins within Qttabbar or you can create your own tabs. I haven't used this myself, but I saw a recent announcement here about https://github.com/vifon/tmsu.el#features by /u/vifon which lets you tag files (with https://tmsu.org/ ) from dired, perhaps it would be possible to add features on top of that to colour based on tags?
