Do you need to access your printer over the internet? Possibly not. But your position is that BL are sending data to their cloud service without good reason. That it offers a feature not provided by Octoprint and Mainsail is that good reason. Thats what my dad did and it worked for me, my printer had another 3 days of work before its first print, also to get your prints to stick to the plate (if you have this problem) put some painters tape over the deck and put spray adhesive over the tape, wait for it to dry, and print. That should get OctoPrint up and running! Now as for slicing, I use Astroprint! It’s pretty easy to add the Astroprint plug-in to OctoPrint, and works like a charm! With my Ender 3 it uses Cura 3.6.0 as the default slicer, and I’ve not had any issues with it so far. (Outside the normal growing pains of learning to 3D print, anyway.)
