  3) Chess.com is not really "official" chess, just the largest online platform with the obvious domain. "Official" would porbably mean FIDE, USCF, or another national organization for OTB play. In that respect there is the American Checkers Federation (ACF) and other national organizations, but they are much less well established than FIDE or USCF.   Except you can very much buy xbox games (even digitally) from other retailers besides Microsoft. greenmangaming.com and amazon both sell xbox digital games, I'm sure other retailers offer codes too. Actually come to think of it I know you can get codes off of best buy's website, and their brick stores offer cards with digital keys on them. So does Walmart. Source: about 1 year ago
