  • Planetary.social
This may not be the perfect space for this question, but it's probably close enough. Evan Henshaw-Plath apparently has a new project called planetary.social that uses a protocol called Scuttlebutt (which I've never heard of), which seems to be "open", but MIT licensed. I've always appreciated Evan's politics (he was a key contributor to Indymedia and Riseup.net, if I remember correctly), but I'm not quite sure... Source: almost 2 years ago
  • New to scuttlebutt and wanting to host a server. Room or Pub?
Rooms are new and only manyverse supports them so far. The new rooms 2.0 is based on go-ssb and there is also a go-ssb pub. With planetary we use go-ssb in the ios app but the older js pubs in the cloud. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2021)
Planetary.social | Go / Swift Devs | Full-Time | Remote | $ Market | https://planetary.social Help us build out secure scuttlebutt as an open protocol for decentralized social media that puts users in control. Work on open source to solve important problems in the world. Planetary is working with twitter's bluesky to build a better future. We're looking dev's who want to work on our decentralized go lang... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • Manyverse – A social network off the grid
Manyverse is a great app, one of several compatible ones which use the secure scuttlebutt protocol. For ios another open source one is https://planetary.social/ which I wrote. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago

  • Ask HN: FOSS Projects Worth Donating To?
I would opt for the serval project [1]. Having a mobile based mesh network facility that is not controlled by neither corporations nor governments is of paramount importance imho. [1] https://servalproject.org/. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

  • What are your thoughts on Satellite Phones?
This app was used to organise protesters in Kuala Lumpur. They anticipated the government would shut down the cell network…which they did. As I understand it (I cannot find the article about it) several thousand people used this application on their android phones to communicate during the protest without internet or cell service…it creates a phone-to-phone network. I don’t know if it is still downloadable. The... Source: over 2 years ago
  • Frugal tips on getting a new cell phone?
Http://servalproject.org/ It's a way for devices to talk to one another without paying for a service. Look for Mesh networks in your area, they provide free service. You can also make yourself a mesh node or support to help spread it. Source: over 2 years ago
  • What do you look for in a internet service provider to save money ?
You can also use Mesh services on your phone even if you don't have a sim card. http://servalproject.org/ When my kids were younger we had them all using Serval Mesh for a long time to stay in contact with one another and such but we were fortunate to live in an area with an abundance of free WiFi just about everywhere so it was used sparingly but came in handy in a pinch. Add that with Google... Source: almost 3 years ago
