Another issue is how to find new friends to have meaningful conversations with. It's difficult having to start over and build a rapport that's supposed to be a substitute for years of knowing a person, and online friendships tend to fizzle out. Meetup is alive, but it is more or less as you say, the groups has cost (normally the people from a group paid together).
