Additonally, you can use the Asus RT-AC3200 and a range of other great Asus routers to run Advanced Tomato. As good as the Asus firmware is, it's not nearly as good as Advanced Tomato, which offers a lot of great features to scan your network environment along with a host of other things. You need a Wi-Fi AP that supports VLAN tagging. Check, if your old router that you are currently using for Wi-Fi, can be flashed to use https://advancedtomato.com or https://openwrt.org. Source: over 2 years ago
If you can flash either Tomoto (FreshTomato or AdvancedTomato), Gargoyle, OpenWrt, or DD-WRT on it then it will be secure. It will not be as performant as a newer router obviously, but it will be secure as you have asked, so ignore the rest of the ignorant comments. Source: over 2 years ago
