Also see https://wordpress.org/openverse/ it allows you to filter to only public domain images. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Google Broke Image Search for Creative Commons and Hardly Anyone Noticed
Thanks for the HN treatment. As a followup piece, a Google response of this being "a bug". Followup story, my return rate for CC licensed images of "dog" went from 3 to 13. More than that, license info is not displayed (only linked), is frequently wrong, and photo credits often given to the site, not the creator of the image. https://cogdogblog.com/2022/10/google-cc-image-search-better-sad/ Try Openverse for much... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Google Broke Image Search for Creative Commons and Hardly Anyone Noticed
Last time I've checked, Creative Commons had their own search for things under their licenses. But now apparently that project got transferred to WordPress and is now named Openverse: https://wordpress.org/openverse/?referrer=creativecommons.org Anyways, I'd argue that's the most comprehensive database of CC-licensed works. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

    > In addition, a searchable database of Creative Commons works would be a welcome addition to the Internet. Openverse is a CC search engine with 600 million items: https://wordpress.org/openverse/ And of course, Google Images supports CC search for images. - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago

  • Anyone know what this is doing off Palm Beach?
First port of call (as it were) when you see strange shipping behaviour is marinetraffic.com. There you can learn the name of the ship, and start a deep dive (as it were) into what it's up to. Source: 8 months ago
  • Help me find a fishing boat
I have searched for the vessel on marinetraffic.com and found some info for it from the USCG Maritime info exchange, but have not been able to locate it. Size: 50.7 feet, origin: USA, Gulf of Mexico, built in 1948, originally named Brigadiere Jr, renamed to Capt Hunter. Source: 11 months ago
  • How to know which docks your ship will dock in?
Assuming the cruise is following the same pattern the prior week, use marinetraffic.com to track and you'll see the precise location. Know that it might change. Source: about 1 year ago
  • AIS ship tracker?
a large portion of the data marinetraffic.com has is people with a AIS setup like pi+daisyHat standing at home and sending in updates. (If you are in a area they dont have good coverage in I belive you can still fill out a form on their site to ask for a free kit). Source: about 1 year ago
  • Proposal idea | Hoping for the most reliable location/business for orca sightings..
If you're in to trying to catch them from land, arm yourself with information. If you have a Facebook account, join "Whale Sightings in the San Juan Islands". Look at an AIS site (example: marinetraffic.com) and search for whale watching boats. Familiarize yourself with the public areas for whale watching (Lime Kiln, County Park, Cattle Point, etc). That should get you 90% there. Source: about 1 year ago
