Bethesda will likely never open source Skyrim, the game engine would need to be recreated from scratch. This has actually been done for Morrowind with the OpenMW project so it is quite possible it could be done for Skyrim as well. That said, Skyrim is a bit more complex than Morrowind in terms of what goes on under the hood so it would be a lot of effort by dedicated people which would take many years to... Morrowind was the first TES game I played so I am biased towards it but the main appeal for me was the unique world and lore the guild quests feel more realistic for example the first couple Mages Guild quests are finding local mushrooms and flowers, gameplay is a bit outdated the combat is based on hit percentages based on you and the enemies skill and stats and fatigue level, the main thing I recommend is using... Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup. Free roguelike with lots of options, but uncomplicated. You can run it on just about anything. Source: almost 2 years ago
Also, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a decent pick. It's free, so hard to beat the price. There's also no music or audio at all, which means I can listen to my own music or a podcast while I rampage through the dungeon as a Troll Berzerker, pulling apart goblins like they're made of monkey bread. Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is a good one. It is a classic-style roguelike that does not feature sound effects or music of its own. I will frequently queue up podcasts to listen to while I take a run or two. Source: over 2 years ago
If you're down for an older-style roguelike, Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is free and it's optimal for a keyboard that has a 10-key (numpad) for movement. There is an endgame, but it takes a lot of luck and doing to reach it. I just poke at the game on occasion to see how far I get. Never been within any reasonable distance of the end. DCSS or Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup as it's known in full is considered to be one of the best roguelikes out there. DCSS originally released in 2006, it's a fork ofLinley's Dungeon Crawl aka. Crawl (1997) which again is based of off modified NetHack code (1987). Source: over 2 years ago
