I recently tried the new Oku Club app for iOS, and I was impressed by what few brave guys were able to do against the Amazon/Goodreads giant. Just the b/w minimalistic style and the goodreads user data importer are selling points to me. Goodreads is truly lacking, but because it has no competitor they are doing nothing to improve. But you don't have to. What you can also do is, as you already suggested get a list of titles from somewhere (say, from a database of ISBNs or scrape them from Amazon) and perform simple string to string matching (maybe with some fuzziness to account for variation in spelling, where NLP techniques might help).
