Back in the day Tremulous was my favourite MP shooter, but since then I've probably racked up more hours in Not Tetris 2 than any other game in existence. I play it whenever I'm zoning out at the computer and need to fiddle with something. That's a good question. In Tetris Effect Connected there's a 1vs1 mode that replicates the NES ruleset, so your goal is to get a good score, not to send lines. And that's all Tetris Effect Connected which doesn't work like modern Tetris. The only versus game that leans more towards the classic side and has a playerbase is Cultris II.
