I used NameExif https://us.digicamsoft.com/softnamexif.html first to rename all my files into created YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS-[event (optional)], then ran exifsort to move them all into YYYY-MM folders. Source: about 1 year ago
The Date Taken data should be preserved which is more important than the file date. You can sort your folders by Date Taken or what I do is use NameExif to rename my photos by date/time taken, which means they’ll always sort correctly and the info can never be accidentally lost.
