I've used outdoor soil sensors from mydevices.com. Once I told them to stop trying to upsell me on the Lora gateways and use Helium, its worked flawlessly. The method that seems to work most reliability with all devices and all ecosystems is a Zigbee2MQTT software hub running on a computer alongside Home Assistant.
