I think spaced repetition can be very helpful in language learning, but the author's plan of finding a pre-made deck of the most common 5,000 words is probably the worst way to use it. A much more effective approach is to create vocab cards yourself as you find new words through your immersion. No one has mentioned it yet, so I'll drop this alternative: https://mochi.cards/ Much prettier than Anki, has a simpler algorithm that doesn't require rating difficulty, and has lots of the same features.
