I really like using Metalsmith as a static site generator myself. It's incredibly lightweight and you can extend it in any direction you like if you feel the need. Here is a suggestion. Try a theme from the likes of https://jekyllthemes.io which has mostly Github Pages friendly themes. Buy it once, set it up on Github Pages. You won't have to pay the monthly hosting free.
