MediaGoblin features and specs

  • Open Source
MediaGoblin is an open-source project, meaning its source code is freely available. This allows users and developers to modify and improve the platform according to their needs.
  • Extensible
MediaGoblin is designed to be highly extensible, allowing developers to add plugins and features easily to cater to specific requirements.
  • Privacy Oriented
Unlike many commercial media hosting services, MediaGoblin puts a strong emphasis on user privacy. Users control their own data, which is a significant advantage in the age of data breaches.
  • Federation Support
MediaGoblin supports federation, which allows instances of MediaGoblin to communicate with each other, creating a more interconnected and decentralized ecosystem.
  • Wide Media Format Support
MediaGoblin supports a wide range of media types, including images, video, audio, 3D models, and more, making it versatile for various media hosting needs.

Possible disadvantages of MediaGoblin

  • Technical Complexity
Setting up and maintaining a MediaGoblin instance can be technically complex, requiring knowledge of server administration and software development.
  • Limited Community Support
As a smaller open-source project, MediaGoblin doesn't have as large a community as some other media hosting platforms, which can result in slower support and fewer resources.
  • Performance Issues
Depending on the server and configuration, MediaGoblin can sometimes face performance issues, especially under heavy load or with large media libraries.
  • User Interface
The default user interface of MediaGoblin is functional but not as polished or modern as some commercial alternatives, which might affect user experience.
  • Development Pace
Being a community-driven project, the pace of development and updates can be slower compared to commercial platforms with dedicated development teams.

Lutim features and specs

  • Open Source
Lutim is open source, meaning that the source code is publicly accessible. This allows users to modify and contribute to the project, enhancing its features and security.
  • No Tracking
Lutim has a strong focus on privacy, ensuring that users are not tracked when using the service. No third-party analytics are included, which is a rare feature for image hosting services.
  • Self-Hosting
Lutim can be self-hosted, giving users full control over their data and server configurations. This feature is ideal for users concerned about data privacy and server performance.
  • Simple Upload
The platform offers a user-friendly interface, allowing for quick and easy image uploads without unnecessary complications.

Possible disadvantages of Lutim

  • Limited Features
Compared to some commercial image hosting solutions, Lutim may lack advanced features like editing tools or comprehensive user management, which can limit its attractiveness for some users.
  • Technical Knowledge Required
For users who want to self-host, a certain level of technical expertise is required to set up and maintain the Lutim instance, which might not be accessible to all potential users.
  • Scalability Concerns
As a self-hosted solution, scaling the service to handle a large number of users or images might require additional resources and technical planning.
  • Community Support
Being an open-source project, support mostly comes from the community, which may not be as immediate or comprehensive as paid support offered by commercial alternatives.

  • We need more of Richard Stallman, not less
    >The organization and ideas should transcend an individual. It is never the case is my observation (as much as I want you to be correct). Any attempt to detach individual form the goals/idea of an organization leads to bureaucracy, incompetence, and perhaps most importantly authoritarianism of the evil kind. • We need more of Richard Stallman, not less
The organization and ideas should transcend an individual. The organization right now seems headed for irrelevance, when the ideas seem to be really more needed now that ever. Right now he’s and his camp are in charge, so if he and the group want to run it into the ground so be it. Hopefully the ideas live on and some group can carry it forward. I always thing back to media goblin as something that should be... - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago

  • Self-Hosting Public-Facing NextCloud Server
Personally, I wouldn't use Nextcloud for photos. Instead, I'd look at Lychee, Media Goblin or something dedicated to photo hosting. Lychee looks great, but turned me off because when I looked at it, it seemed to be like Apple Photos in that it puts image files in a database file instead of just raw files in folders.
