The reason which made me curious in the first place was that I could not compile a document successfully which, however, was possible on my Windows machine where I have installed texlive using the online installer of tug.org. For a conversion to an e-book, it is possible to take a trip through (La)TeX and TeX4ht, or use Pandoc, which is pretty good at converting from Markdown to HTML (better than between, say, HTML and LaTeX). Regardless, both latex and all the latex editors I've used (including overleaf) are not wysiwyg, but they tend to have both a source pane and a document preview pane that makes quickly editing nicer. I generally use Kile (good screenshot). Source: about 2 years ago
