Well, it depends on what your aim is. If you want a Linux-based system that can be used as a daily driver, then Gentoo is certainly a reasonable choice. But if you're not particularly interested in using the system once you've finished installing, then Linux From Scratch is probably more appropriate. Recently in one of my work projects at SUSE I ran into a job queue congestion issue. We have a lot of very slow background jobs to perform various maintenance tasks, such as cleaning up old files from disk that are no longer needed.
