Few routers are supported and widespread ad-hoc mesh networking remains mostly a pipe dream at this point. You can find a few attempts to do what you're asking for such as commotion and libremesh but they are just attempts and require significant planning put into the layout and configuration of the network which largely defeats your reason for wanting mesh networking. Paid subscription service, seems to be of good quality. Although I've never actually tried it, I've been hearing that the people behind it may be doing some shady business. Which VPN do you use, out of curiosity? For me, the Calyx VPN app drains a substantial amount of battery, even with the 'Save battery' toggle on, so I can't really use it for extended periods.
