They probably did, but Google Wave was VERY different than how it is implemented in Docs and other apps. Check out rizzoma.com some time, and see what Wave looked like. They took the source code after Google opened it up. (There were others, as well, Rizzoma happened to be the one I used, so I remember it). Source: almost 3 years ago
