As for free and open source software, there is some that is good and available on Windows. Kdenlive is of a similar level to Vegas. It is always good to know different editing systems if you plan on doing this for a career. Lightworks is a very good editing system that lets you focus on the editing itself without bogging you down in lots of effects and many different panels. Lightworks has a free version which makes it very advantageous to start out with.
