Honestly, anything from Kaspersky is outstanding. Their free version (security cloud) is good, with basic features including an AV engine and real time protection, as well as anti-ransomware. However, if you buy one of their payed versions, such as essential protection plan (anti-virus) or internet security, you get more customization and security features. Is the Verizon one a combined modem/router? If you want to add your own router, you might have to call them and ask them to put it into bridged mode. I like OpenWRT because it gives you a lot of customization options.
