Unpaid work is not ideal but I have noticed that just having the title of "UX Designer" on my resume has gained a bit of traction and it's a great way to keep your design skills fresh as you search. For web maps I'd strongly recommend using OpenLayers. While it's less convenient to get started with compared to the alternatives it's also much more feature-complete and you'll likely hit a ceiling in terms of functionality much later than you would with the others. Source: 11 months ago
