Success: building/installing the latest version of Guitarix from scratch on Ubuntu 20.04
After that, you can navigate to the folder with the code (the folder containing the waf script), and run the commands as described on the Guitarix home page. There are lots of arpeggiators built into synths, but one I really like - and one that should be able to do this for you - is Xfer Cthulhu.
