You can play as actively as you want, but you can also close the tab and not return for years, and your character will happily quest/level up/buy/sell/eat/fish/heal/revive/change guilds/get drunk/etc. On its own. Forbidden knowledge, entities or places or concepts that cause insanity through awareness fall under the umbrellas of what they refer to as cognitohazards, infohazards, and memetic anomalies.
