    Though FWIW my real answer, if you were asking this as a practical question rather than an educational exercise, would be to find some existing standard encryption program and use that.     MACsec on Catalyst switches would do it. Either through a point-to-point or some sort of ELAN/VPLS between sites and encrypt traffic over that route.
