Personally I use GdLauncher since it's really simple to use, it also automatically installs open jdk for you, something that basically makes the game run better than normal java, and can still manually download mods that have third-party downloads disabled. Source: over 1 year ago

I like both GDLauncher and PolyMC, but I haven't played much Minecraft since Overwolf bought Curse and made it significantly harder for 3rd party launchers to download packs, so it's possible that it's more difficult to use them these days. Source: over 1 year ago
Here is a link to Modloader for MCb173. It needs adding directly into the minecraft.jar file, however if you use a launcher like MultiMC, which you can find here: https://multimc.org/ then there is an option to 'add to minecraft jar file' which does the same thing. Source: 11 months ago
I used to have this issue lots, and it was due to my internet being too restrictive. The Minecraft Launcher was refusing to open, and I fixed it by messing with the restrictions until it worked. Hopefully this helps :) if all else fails of course, try just reinstalling it! I’m sure that all your config files don’t get affected by reinstalling it, but just in case make a backup.
