For recommendations on areas to live have a look at the wiki - the first few links there let you search by budget and commute time (and Find My Area let's you put in a whole lot of other stuff). Whatever safe bed you can find at this point. You've left it too late to be picky and it's looking like it's going to be the start of the the busiest, boomiest tourist season here in Italy ever. Expect to have to stay very, very, very far from city centers and transit connections or to pay $400+/night on a place.
