Yes, were it not for the "email is great" part I think I would agree with the sentiment of the article. It's what happened to reddit, having the open source code for reddit didn't really help once they closed it. You could still replace the URL with a proprietary codebase or rewrite some of the code before re-licensing so it's not bullet proof. The best defense I can think off is having it be hosted by some volunteer led non profit (something like feneas ) so it won't get sold off. Source: almost 3 years ago

I think it would be better to collaborate with some existing organisations like disroot or feneas, having a organisation with multiple maintainers is useful if someone decides to quit (which is normal, any contribution is great).
