It's what happened to reddit, having the open source code for reddit didn't really help once they closed it. You could still replace the URL with a proprietary codebase or rewrite some of the code before re-licensing so it's not bullet proof. The best defense I can think off is having it be hosted by some volunteer led non profit (something like feneas ) so it won't get sold off. Source: almost 3 years ago

I think it would be better to collaborate with some existing organisations like disroot or feneas, having a organisation with multiple maintainers is useful if someone decides to quit (which is normal, any contribution is great). Reddit is the other place where huge political slap fights happened for America and a few others with massive legions of bots flooding the site with Qanon and Pizzagate making debuts here from 4chan, now its in a weaker position to fight bots than before and helmed by a man who thinks conspiracies are good.
