If you want a good free software I'd recommend familyecho.com - you can import/export family trees and I also think there's a share function if you and your friends want? It does also calculate the closest relation between two people automatically. If you're looking for something more complex, I'd highly suggest GenoPro, a genogram-making application where you can draw out a family tree and include additional information along with it, such as interfamilial relationships, medical history, and all sorts of things.
