Linters can check for this sort of thing, for example Error Prone[0] has a lint[1] for this. Totally agree this is better to be in the language proper so we don't need this extra tooling. I would really use https://c9.io It's a cloud programming environment and it's freaking fantastic for RoR, and free. That way you don't have to maintain a programming environment on your machine, and you can work from any web browser anywhere you want.
